To achieve a sustainable future, we need a renaissance. The hype of consumerism has changed people’s notion of value, we are used to buying and throwing. Before, we used to keep things and repair them. Though some objects didn’t have high economical value, they were treasured. They are not wearied by age, instead, they are endowed with invaluable stories.
In this project, I memorialize the past by exploring and making ‘biographies’ for old objects, restoring them to the currents of life. The inspiration comes from a black coat my grandma had. When my grandma got married, most families at that time could not afford to buy a formal bridal gown. In order to give her a surprise, my grandpa saved his wages for several months and bought a stylish black coat for her to wear at their wedding. She kept it for many years.
